Not Your Everyday Shipment
Published Jun 25, 2008

It’s big. No, it’s huge. No, it’s gargantuan.

A metal hull that will be part of an offshore oil platform to be erected in the Gulf of Mexico was transported through the La Quinta Ship Channel in Corpus Christi on June 19.

According to the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, the hull weighs about 19,000 tons and measures 555 feet long and 118 feet wide. It was built in Finland and then shipped 8,200 miles to the Texas Gulf Coast.

The hull resides temporarily at Kiewit Offshore Services in Ingleside, which is designing and manufacturing the topside of what is known as the Perdido Regional Development Spar.

When installed and operational about 220 miles off the coast at Galveston, it will be the world’s deepest oil-production facility, capable of delivering about 100,000 barrels of oil and 200 million cubic feet of natural gas daily. The project is a joint venture among BP, Chevron and Shell.
