Legendary Barbecue Served at Joe Cotten’s
Published Apr 23, 2008
Lyndon Johnson enjoyed several meals here, as have George Bush the elder and George Bush the younger. So has every Texas governor since 1947.
Joe Cotten’s Barbecue began smoking meats in Robstown more than 60 years ago and has been serving customers ever since. The restaurant on U.S. Highway 77 South, just 16 miles west of Corpus Christi, offers four kinds of mesquite-cooked meat – beef brisket, sausage, ribs and sliced pork – either by the pound as a full dinner, on an open sandwich or in a closed sandwich. No birds are on the menu here.
The heaping helpings come with a thick slice of white onion, jalapenos, pickle spears and a fresh tomato half delivered on freezer paper rather than plates. There are three sides to choose from – pinto beans, potato salad and green salad. The pinto beans are accented with onions and peppers and the barbecue sauce is a chunky mix of tomato, peppers, onion and garlic.
The restaurant is open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Along with your appetite, bring cash. No credit cards accepted.
