Big Game is Big Business in Coastal Bend Region

Dozens of guide services are available to help hunters bag turkeys, waterfowl, quail, deer, hogs and other game.
Duck hunting is big business in the Coastal Bend region.
Dozens of guide services are available to help hunters bag the waterfowl. Most such excursions include decoys, dog retrievers, blinds and bird cleaning.
“Hunters just need to bring their own shotguns, steel shot shells, wading boots and hunting license, and we’ll take care of the rest,” says Jason Rieger, owner of South Texas Guide Service. “We even offer airboat transportation to ideal duck hunting spots around Corpus Christi, Ingleside, Rockport and Aransas Pass.”
Prices vary, but the average guided hunt costs approximately $500 for one to three people.
“Duck hunting is big here, but there are plenty of other hunting opportunities,” Rieger says.
“For example, dove hunting is popular, and so are goose hunts. This region is also known for turkey and quail.”
But Coastal Bend offers more than bird hunting. Trophy whitetail deer are found in abundance, and so are feral hogs. “Feral hog hunting is big in South Texas, especially since the animals can be hunted year-round,” Rieger says, adding, “you don’t need a license anymore because their populations have gotten so large.”
Rieger says hunters travel to the region from all over the Southwest and beyond in pursuit of big game and waterfowl.
“We can take customers onto the water or to some of the finest hunting ranches in South Texas,” he says. “If you like to hunt, this is the place.”
